Djs by AZUMI Touru: | |
|
Hanazange (Flower Confession) Note: Many of Azumi's djs are A4 size (about 9 inches by 12 inches). In other words, big! This is one breathtaking wraparound cover. (Click on the thumbnail to see the whole thing full size.) White petals float on a background of seafoam as Kurama embraces Hiei. And for those who recognize their wistful expressions and gorgeous hair as hallmarks of Azumi Touru, it may be a little confusing to see this on the back: BERUSAIYU NO ONNA TACHI A = Katase/ P = Iwashita Hmm...no mention of Azumi Touru. None inside either. One story is credited to Katase, and another to Hyuga Asai. It also mentions that A = Katase Rino and P = Iwashita Shima. What's going ONNNNN? Well, thanks to M.J. Johnson's sleuthing, we can explain everything. And we will, too, so that if you ever come across a dj with these names you can decipher them. It appears that both Azumi Touru and Hyuga Asai came from Rose of Versailles fandom, where their circle was Berusaiyu no Onna-tachi (Wives of Versailles). Their Rose of Versailles fan names were Antoinette and Polignac (usually written in katakana or abbreviated to A and P). However, at this time they were moving on to YYH fandom, and had adopted the names Katase Rino and Iwashita Shima. They were to change those names, too. After this they pretty consistently used Azumi Touru and Hyuga Asai, and Azumi's djs are mostly put out by Kotobukitei (which was already in existence at the same time as Berusaiyu no Onna-tachi.) But since there are still lots of djs around with the old names, it might be useful to keep in mind the following: Also, if you see this little creature below, you know you're holding an Azumi Touru dj. It's her mascot, and can be seen in her information pages and in a number of her stories (check out the stuffed animal Chibi Yuusuke chews on near the end of 'Angel's Bite,' and the one Hiei sits on at the end of 'I Have No Confidence.' See? Wasn't that simple? And now back to the dj itself. Hanazange has great production values: nice thick pages, textured art paper, gold foil on the cover, plus a vellum frontispiece of Yuusuke and Kaname (click on the thumbnail to see the full size pic). Although it has only two stories, they're relatively long and beautifully drawn. There are also some lovely black-and-white sketches of Kurama, Hiei, and Kaname in and around the information pages. Chapter of Final Pleasure
by Hyuga Asai Last Night, This Flower....
by Azumi Touru Before you buy the dj, though, be aware of a couple of things. There's also a revised edition of Hanazange (reviewed next), and it has 'Last Night, This Flower...' plus two other shorts. But, wait! There's more. In Hanagatami (also reviewed below) there's a new prologue, epilogue, plus a new ending for 'Last Night, This Flower....' Yep! The last couple of pages have all-new art and slightly different text. Completists might want to get all the versions, others have to weigh the benefits of getting the shorts or the revised version of the story against the merits of the different covers. Overall, recommended. The art alone is worth the price of this dj, in our opinion. And Kaname fans will definitely want to check it out. There's no explicit sex, but clear yaoi implications, plus some serious angst. |

Hanazange (Flower Confession)
Revised Edition This dj is smaller than Hanazange (B5 instead of A4 size) but slightly thicker (46 pages rather than 40). The cover is gray with a smaller version of the Hanazange front cover inset. On the back is an inset of the Kaname/Yuusuke frontispiece from Hanazange. The frontispiece is a lovely Kurama/Hiei embrace, but it's all in dark brown tones which make details hard to discern. Again, nice production values, although not as lavish as the first version. What this dj does have, though, is two new shorts: a Kurama X Yuusuke story by Azumi and a Mitarai/Kaname story by Hyuga Asai. Otherwise, the content is exactly the same as Hanazange. High
by Azumi Touru Untitled
by Hyuga Asai Chapter of Final Pleasure
by Hyuga Asai Last Night, This Flower....
by Azumi Touru Again, don't buy this dj before considering all the alternatives: there's also the first edition of Hanazange, which lacks the two shorts but is A4 size and has a nicer cover, and Hanagatami, which has the prologue, epilogue and new ending to 'Last Night, This Flower...' Recommended, but check out the other versions. ^_^ Of course Kaname fans will probably want to take a look at the untitled Kaname short. |

Honban (Theatrical Performance) Yet another gorgeous cover and more great production values. The cover is black with a separate wraparound dustcover on matte silver foil. The title, printed on black, is in holofoil, which doesn't scan very well. We suspect the picture is by Hyuga Asai, although we can't find a credit for it. The vellum frontispiece is by Azumi and shows Koenma tenderly embracing a bound and bleeding Yuusuke. Dear, dear. Inside you'll find: Recycling for the Earth Theater by Hyuga Asai Futari shizuka by Hyuga Asai Ranhansha (Defused Reflection) by Murakoshi Hiromi Untitled
by Hyuga Asai Snow Romance by Azumi Touru Overall evaluation: Unless you can read the Japanese text tale, this dj has about fourteen pages of story, and most of that is gags. On the other hand, the cover is truly beautiful and 'Snow Romance' has some lovely art. Also, there are several nice black and white sketches on the info pages--for instance the Hiei at left, as slim and dangerous as the blade he holds. If you enjoy Azumi and Hyuga's art, you might want this one; if you're interested more in story content you might skip to one of the more substantial djs below, like Hanagatami or Radical Boys. Koenma fans take note, since there are three stories involving him, plus the frontispiece. |

Jukkai (The Ten Buddhist
Precepts) This cover is to die for. Our description from the Azumi Touru gallery: Yuusuke wearing a shirt of malachite, with tigereye eyes and hair of chalcedony. Plus some blood and flowers. (Click on the thumbnail at left to see the full size picture with the letters removed.) In person, it also has a texture that's hard to describe. It seems to be printed on the smooth reverse side of art paper that's splashed with large silver droplets, and as the paper is translucent, the silver shows through a bit, making the blank parts of the cover look like white marble. Anyway, it's very nice. The frontispiece is at left: another picture we really like. And, as you may be starting to suspect, this is a Yuusuke dj. A Yuusuke as uke dj, or, as Azumi and Hyuga put it, 'A book where Yuusuke gets a lot of love.' The stories are by a number of different djka. To wit: Kaze ga tomaru to kaite 'nagi' by Kaori (?) A love ballad offered to Azumi-san by Tendo (?) Shizuki (?) A pointless manga and veneration
of Azumi Touru by Katsume Untitled
by Minezaki Satoi (?) Special Boyfriend by Hyuga Asai Untitled Jin X Yuusuke by Azumi Touru Me de Korose (Kill Me With
Your Eyes) by Azumi Touru Overall: Guess what? We'd buy this dj if all the pages except the cover were blank! Okay, yeah, enough about the cover. The shorts look amusing, and the two Azumi stories are both nice. Jin fans will be interested. As always, there are some good
black and white sketches in the information pages. With all that
nice art, it's hard to go wrong. Recommended. |

Yoin (Echoes) A lovely cover by Hyuga Asai, and similar to the cover to her hardback Destiny, at the bottom of this page. The frontispiece is by Azumi, a gorgeous and feral Kurama on a background of blood. That said, this a rather slim dj, although with Azumi and Hyuga drawing it almost every page is attractive. The stories inside are: Pavane for a Dead Princess
by Hyuga Asai Mr. Bear from the Woods by Hyuga Asai Reckless Dangerous by Azumi Touru To become a lovely corpse
is like sunshine. I'll die young and lively
by Hyuga Asai Fight! Fight what? Fight life!
by Azumi Touru Untitled
by Hyuga Asai Eurasian
by Azumi Touru Untitled
by Hyuga Asai Overall: If you don't like shorts, this dj isn't for you. On the other hand, you might want it just for the cover and frontispiece. ^_- 'Eurasian,' 'Reckless Dangerous' and 'Fight! Fight what?' are included in Kagekiha Shounen (reviewed below). |

Chu Chu (Squeak Squeak) Yeah, it's another circle...wahaha. This one seems to be composed of Sugiura Mamiko, Momohara Masaki and the extremely sociable Azumi. They also have guest artists. Chu Chu is entirely Hiei X Yuusuke, which caused Jeanne to comment, 'My, these girls are weird.' Remember, back then the height rule was pretty strictly enforced. As if to prove themselves iconoclasts, the artists have put Yuusuke and Hiei back to back on the cover in proper 'Let's see who's taller' position. (Gee, and Hiei's even shorter than I remembered-- especially if you realize that about a foot of him is hair.) Moreover, the title Chu Chu means 'Squeak Squeak' (as in a mouse noise, like Anthy's pet) and most of the stories have to do with Hiei's stature. As Azumi-tachi say about the dj, 'Yaoi is absent but there's a certain amount of evil-doing.' This includes: About Hiei Being So Small.... by Momohara Masaki I Have No Confidence by Azumi Touru Imagine Hiei Getting Hurt!
by Momohara Masaki With You Forever by Gin Kemeko Love Me Easily by Sugiura Mamiko And that's it. There aren't as many nice sketches in the info pages, although there's one cute pic of Hiei standing on Puu in order to kiss Yuusuke (it makes him just the right height). Still, there are several funny shorts and several cute Chibi Hieis. Yuusuke and Hiei fans should definitely check it out. We enjoyed the whole dj. |
|
Kagekiha Shounen (Radical
Boys) And production values are still high inside. The end pages are silver, the title is on vellum, and the frontispiece (a line sketch of the cover picture) is on textured art paper. Also there are a number of nice black and white sketches (all by Azumi) in the info pages. Inside: You Brute Man of Mystery Kyoufu Haitatsujin The World's Strangest Story The World you Don't Know Untitled Jin X Yuusuke by Azumi Touru Reckless Dangerous I
Have No Confidence
Eurasian
by Azumi Touru Text story by Murakoshi Hiromi Snow Romance by Azumi Touru Fight! Fight what? Fight life! by Azumi Touru Me de Korose by Azumi Touru Overall: Here's a way to get your dose of Azumi in concentrated, extra-strength form. What you're missing, of course, are some of the glorious covers and frontispieces to be found in the other djs. You're also missing the various incarnations of 'Last Night, This Flower...' but you can remedy that by getting Hanagatami, reviewed below. In fact, if you get Kagehika Shounen and Hanagatami you've got a fair chunk of Azumi's work in just two djs. Highly recommended. |

Opera of Comet in Rosa
An absolutely fabulous wraparound cover. (Click on the thumbnail to it full size without letters.) Plus an equally lovely frontispiece and nice production values. This is an all Kurama X Yuusuke dj, with stories by many different authors. They're mostly shorts and we're not going to list all of them; just the highlights. But anybody who likes to see Kurama and Yuusuke together should check out this dj. Cherry Kiss by Azumi Touru Where Your Smile Has Gone by Narushima Yuri Beddo de Finaado by Gin Kemeko A story with a long weird
title by Sugiiura Mamiko Angel's Bite
by Azumi Touru Warning: The unedited version of this story has slightly shotacon implications. Overall: Recommended. If you like Kurama and Yuusuke together you'll definitely want this one. If you don't like them together, well, this dj might just convince you. We love it for the art alone, and 'Angel's Bite' is one of our favorite Azumi stories. 'Cherry Kiss' isn't available in any other dj we've seen. Be aware, though, that the unedited
version of 'Angel's Bite' has slightly shotacon implications. |

Yusuke Urameshi Magazine A tall slim dj in black and white--it's rather striking, actually. The whole thing is a showcase for the main story by Azumi. There are also several very nice (and very big) black and white drawings in the info pages. Inside: Get Your Nerve Together and
Confess by Momohara Masaki I Won't Be Beaten by Azumi Touru A Kurama X Yuusuke called
Kurama X Yuusuke by Sugiura
Mamiko And that's the lot. Raizen fans should take note because Azumi draws him rather nicely. And the whole dj does have a distinctive, artsy look. You have to think of it as an eight page story in a very elaborate setting. ^_- Caution: if you don't want to see incestuous implications, stay away from any Raizen X Yuusuke story. (Um, we're trying to walk a fine line between necessary warnings and spoilers here. Just in case.) |

Hanagatami (Flower Basket) Wai! This isn't a flower basket, it's a glorious arm-filling bouquet. Azumi has pulled out all the stops, offering a package that's overflowing with gorgeous art, lavish production values, and an expanded version of a haunting story. The wraparound cover is a soft pastel of Kurama, with silver lettering (click on the thumbnail to see it full size). Inside is art paper, vellum, and not one but three color plates. The first is a very delicate pastel of Hiei, the second a two-page spread of the cover of Hanazange, and the third a dazzling Kurama/ Hiei portrait in blue. They're all very, very nice. Then there's a title page with a spray of flowers in silver foil and a preface with a sketch of Kurama looking extremely graceful, his arms filled with blossoms. Wow. All the stories inside are by Azumi Touru. Insane Last Night, This Flower...
Prologue (Eurasian) Last Night, This Flower....
Note: this is the revised version of the story. The last couple of pages have all-new art and slightly different text. Last Night, This Flower...
Epilogue (Eurasian) Overall: A lovely dj, with topnotch art and what promises to be a very nice central story. We haven't seen 'Insane' or the complete version of 'Last Night This Flower....' anywhere else. Highly recommended. |
|
Harukuru Oni (Demon of
Spring) This is a big dj, which makes the cover picture even more arresting: a small Hiei asleep in the crook of a large tree. Click on the thumbnail to see it without the vellum overlay which has gold lettering on it. It's also the slimmest of all Azumi's djs, but there are some nice stories and a surprising amount of good art in it. This includes a two page color plate at the end of Hiei wrapped in his cloak. Inside you'll find: If My Dreams Come True by Azumi Touru Working Man by Katagiri Atsuko Angel's
Bite Side Story
by Azumi Touru Made in Tears 2 by Katagiri Atsuko And that's that! Overall: It's a very striking dj, and has some nice stories. We haven't seen the Mukuro story 'If My Dreams Come True' anywhere else. Recommended for that, the art, or if you want to complete your Azumi collection. |
|
Yusuke Urameshi Magazine
II This is actually a very nice cover--Yuusuke looks quite cross and dynamic in his army-green uniform. Click on the thumbnail to see a full-figure transparent gif we made of him. There's nice art inside, too,
including a belligerent SD Yuusuke in the okuzuke and a fabulous
Mazoku Yuusuke in the postscript. (He looks like some kind of
barbarian warrior...hey, wait! He is some kind of barbarian
warrior.) Don't Give In, Girls! by Azumi Touru The Youkai Situation by Azumi Touru Genki! Genki! by Gin Kemeko Breath of Snow by Azumi Touru Prehistory and the Future by Azumi Touru Overall: We like this dj. We like the cover and the poem at the end, and the sketches in the info pages. We also like the stories, which we haven't seen anywhere else. Recommended. |
|
Ten no Rakuin (Bastard
Son of Heaven) This is actually one long story (very long for Azumi). We love the Yuusuke on the cover (the thumbnail shows him the way he's supposed to be. In the gallery we always turn him the other side up because it's easier to look at him. ^_-). The back cover is nice, too. Plus, there's a frontispiece of Hiei and Yuusuke and a gorgeous two page spread of Yuusuke with one angelic and one demonic wing. Click on the thumbnails to see the full size pics. The story is a serious Hiei X Yuusuke tale. (Yay! We found one!) A wounded Hiei appears in Yuusuke's bedroom, wrestles him to the floor, and kisses him. A nice Hiei X Yuusuke kiss...the poor little guy has waited a long time for it, too. After collapsing in Yuusuke's lap, he... well, maybe we'd better save the ending, since we intend to do this story. Anyway, it's angsty but nice. Overall: A beautiful dj. Lots and lots of great art, and a story that's both lovely and rare...you're not going to find a lot of Hiei X Yuusuke out there. Highly recommended, and not just for Hiei and Yusuke fans. |

Destiny Although this dj doesn't have any Azumi Touru, we've presented enough of Hyuga Asai's work here to feel that we should mention it. It's also a very interesting dj because it's one of the rare hardbacks we've found. It's difficult to scan, but it has a nice sturdy feel in the hands. It also has a pretty frontispiece (hard to scan flat) with Hyuga's signature blue-green 'forest lights' background. Most or all of the stories inside are by Hyuga. There are a number of long, serious, nicely-drawn Kurama X Hiei tales, several of them beginning with K & H's first meeting. The last, 'Kernal Kaku,' looks particularly good. There are also some funny shorts about the Ankoku Bujutsukai. Overall: Recommended! There's a lot of solid entertainment between these hard covers. If you like Kurama and Hiei and you get a chance to pick this up, go for it. |
